Who gets to own a lighthouse on Lake Erie?

The U.S. General Services Administration auctioned the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light in 2023, and News5 Cleveland reports bidding closed at $425,000. In April 2026, GSA announced it is offering the lighthouse again, at no cost, to eligible organizations.

Some addresses are reached by boat.

In 2023, the U.S. General Services Administration offered the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light, at the main entrance to Cleveland Harbor from Lake Erie, through a public online auction. GSA's announcement describes a four-story brick conical tower built 1909 to 1910, about 1,800 square feet, with a basement, a first-floor galley, living quarters above and an attached fog signal building. News5 Cleveland reports it is accessible by boat only.

GSA's terms: a $25,000 starting bid, $1,000 bid increments and a $10,000 registration deposit, with site inspections for registered bidders. The announcement also states that “the property will remain an active aid to navigation.” It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a City of Cleveland landmark. News5 Cleveland reported the auction closed September 6 at $425,000, seventeen times the opening bid.

Then the story turned. In April 2026, GSA announced it is again offering the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse, this time at no cost under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, to eligible organizations including federal agencies, nonprofits, educational institutions and community development organizations.

What it shows: the same property can be offered by different routes, an auction one year and a no-cost transfer to eligible organizations the next. The route decides who can say yes, and the conditions set the buyer pool before price does.

The question worth asking: what stays with the property after it changes hands, and who holds it? Ask the seller's published terms.

If a property on your desk has an unusual access or use condition, send the address, and we will pull the public record alongside you.
